€750,000 are being invested to support some 150 farmers for the efficient use of water in the agricultural sector, This investment is being carried out as part of the agency’s campaign, WATER – BE THE CHANGE’. The scheme allows farmers to receive a grant of up to €5,000 to help them move towards sustainable agriculture practices.

Energy and Water Agency CEO, Manuel Sapiano explained that measures under the scheme can range from improving existing irrigation systems, restoring water reservoirs to upgrading piping systems. Eligible farmers can also receive assistance and recommendations from technical officers on the actions proposed.

An Mġarr farmer explained that through the scheme, he is harvesting more rainwater and is using it more efficiently. The works carried out involved the introduction of a piping system that connects two reservoirs. In turn this reduces water loss and increases the rainwater catchment capacity which is highly needed by the farmers.

During the press conference in Mġarr, Minister for Energy, Enterprise, and Sustainable Development Miriam Dalli and the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Animal Rights Anton Refalo, announced that more farmers can benefit from this scheme.

Minister Dalli continued to emphasise the importance of improving sustainability in the agricultural sector. Through the introduction of such measures, the efficiency of water usage will increase the sector’s productivity.

Minister Refalo said that through such initiatives, the water demand will reduce and this helps to reduce the pressure on the farmers and the environment. He continued to explain that water is crucial for agriculture and that the agricultural sector is essential for the country.

Data will also be collected through the project, to allow technical experts from both ministries to further develop effective policies. These policies will continue to help Malta and Gozo move towards a sustainable agricultural sector. For more information click here
