LIFE RBMP Project Progress Reviewed During Online Monitoring Visit
30 Jun, 2026 | by RBMP Life |  On 23 June 2026, action leaders of the LIFE RBMP Project participated in an online monitoring visit with the project's External Monitor, providing an important opportunity to review progress, share achievements and discuss the continued implementation of project actions supporting Malta's River Basin Management Plan (RBMP). The meeting brought together project partners to present the results achieved to date and outline the next steps required to ensure the successful completion of the project.
During the session, action leaders presented updates on a wide range of actions addressing key water management challenges. These included the development of an eco-label scheme, sustainable urban drainage systems, managed aquifer recharge, valley management initiatives, industrial discharge controls, the restoration of coastal wetlands, the monitoring of emerging pollutants and measures to enhance circularity in wastewater treatment. Updates were also provided on actions focusing on alternative water resources, deep saline aquifers and the GreenShield initiative aimed at improving flood resilience.
The meeting provided a valuable platform to showcase key milestones and demonstrate how the project is contributing towards strengthening the implementation and development of Malta's RBMP. Partners also shared lessons learned throughout the project, highlighting innovative approaches and collaborative efforts that are helping to improve sustainable water management across the Maltese Islands.
Discussions with the External Monitor focused on the long-term sustainability and impact of the project's actions, ensuring that the results achieved will continue to support national priorities and contribute to the attainment of EU water policy objectives beyond the project's lifetime. This meeting reaffirmed the importance of continued cooperation among stakeholders in delivering lasting environmental and water management benefits for Malta.
