In celebration of Earth Day, the Energy and Water Agency marked the occasion with an informative and practical awareness session at Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Malta, focusing on Malta’s water reality and how individuals can make a real difference through informed daily choices.

The session provided an overview of Malta’s water situation, explaining the limited natural water resources and the different water sources used locally, including groundwater, desalinated water, and rainwater harvesting. Participants were helped to better understand their energy and water bills, including how to interpret consumption data, tariffs, and account types.

A strong emphasis was placed on empowering employees to become aware of their own water consumption. Attendees were guided on how to carry out a home water audit by using available information from their water bill, household water meters, and the WSC online Live Map service. This included practical steps on how to identify leaks, characterise water demand, and determine where and how water is being consumed within the home. Participants were encouraged to look beyond obvious water uses and consider daily practices and activities that consume significant amounts of water and energy, often without realising it.

One of the Agency’s House Visits officers also contributed to the session, offering hands‑on advice on energy and water efficiency. The officer explained billing rates, highlighted the most water‑ and energy‑intensive household appliances, and shared practical tips on how to maximise appliance efficiency in a way that is both environmentally sustainable and cost‑effective.

Practical water conservation measures were also discussed, including shorter showers, grey water reuse, rainwater collection, and simple habits such as turning off taps while brushing teeth — demonstrating that small everyday actions can lead to significant savings.

All attendees received a “Water – Be the Change” kit, a practical tool containing five water‑saving devices:

  • Kitchen swivel aerator
  • Bathroom aerator
  • Hand‑held shower head
  • Shower on‑off switch
  • Flushing tank bag
  • Instruction booklet with water‑saving tips

The importance of installing such devices was highlighted, as they can collectively reduce water consumption by up to 19 litres per person per day.

The key message delivered throughout the session was clear: if each of us does a little, together we can achieve a lot — for the environment, for our water resources, and for our pockets.

This activity formed part of Action C1 and Action C4 of the LIFE-IP RBMP Project, led by the Energy and Water Agency.
