Celebrating Europe Day at Għajn – The National Water Conservation Centre
07 May, 2026 | by RBMP Life |  Europe Day was celebrated this year in a meaningful and educational way at Għajn, the National Water Conservation Centre, bringing together young learners, sustainability, and the shared values of unity and peace across Europe.
To mark the occasion, Year 4 students from St Joseph Junior School, Sliema, were invited to take part in an engaging learning experience that combined environmental awareness with interactive play. The visit highlighted the importance of working together to protect our most precious natural resource, water.
Central to the day’s activities was the “Fairly Hydrated Knight” programme, an educational initiative designed to introduce students to the conservation of natural water resources while showcasing traditional water management practices rooted in Malta’s history and culture. The session began with an interactive introduction by the Centre’s educator, who explained how historic systems such as cisterns, aqueducts, boreholes, and spring galleries played a crucial role in managing water sustainably long before modern technology.
Learning then came to life through a fun, hands‑on games. Each activity reinforced key principles of water conservation, problem‑solving, and teamwork - values that resonate strongly with the spirit of Europe Day.
To further commemorate the occasion, students also drew the flags of all EU Member States, creating a colourful and symbolic reminder of European unity and peace. This creative activity encouraged reflection on how countries across Europe are connected by shared goals, including the protection of natural resources and the promotion of sustainability. The students then coloured in the Europe Day posters and wrote down some water-saving tips as part of the awareness message promoted throughout their respective educational visit.
By giving young learners the right tools and knowledge, initiatives like these help shape responsible habits from an early age. Through education, engagement, and inspiration, we are empowering the next generation to care for our planet, while celebrating the cooperation and solidarity that define Europe. At RBMP LIFE Malta, we are proud to support activities that combine environmental education with European values, building a more sustainable future for all.
This activity formed part of Action C4 of the LIFE-IP RBMP Project, led by the Energy and Water Agency. The action focuses on developing targeted water education initiatives, particularly for younger generations, to raise awareness about Malta’s limited water resources and encourage responsible water‑use behaviours among students and the wider public.
