Action A.5: Mapping of industrial polluting activities
Through this action a study will be set-up to identify the types and main constituents of liquid waste waters being generated and disposed of by particular sectors of industry (Pharmaceuticals, Paints/pigment production, Waste treatment facilities, Healthcare, Electronics, Printing Presses, Chemical Manufacturing) either through shipments or discharged to sewer (either directly or indirectly) through waste carriers. This goal will be achieved by commissioning a number of reports
assigned to technical expert/s who have the necessary competence to evaluate the industrial sectors that are to be investigated. The results of these reports will be collated and integrated within a discharge framework based on the spatial Geographical Area of the various industrial sites in the Maltese Islands. The various industrial sectors examined will also be evaluated in terms of the level of risk they pose to the integrity of the sewer network and compliance to the discharge regulations.
These studies will be commissioned at the initial stage of the project so that the information gathered will help the Discharge Permitting Unit (DPU) to better target its enforcement efforts as highlighted by the findings of previous reports derived from this project. The
enforcement of discharges into sewer within the Maltese Islands has not kept up with the fast-paced development of the local industry in the past years. This has created a vacuum of knowledge which is meant to be bridged through the implementation of this action.
