The Energy and Water Agency through the LIFE-IP RBMP-MALTA Project is supporting ten schools in Malta and Gozo to undertake initiatives for the promotion of rainwater harvesting and other water conservation practices. The schools being supported through this initiative are:
Immaculate Conception, Tarxien; San Gwann Primary School, Savio College, San Gorg Preca College Hamrun Secondary, San Gorg Preca College Valletta Primary, Gozo College Sannat Primary, St Nicholas College Mtarfa Primary, Maria Regina College Wardija, Santa Margerita Isla Primary and St Benedict College Safi Primary.
The selected projects have involved students, through the Eco-Schools initiative, in the development of the project proposal hence enabling the students to better appreciate the importance of water conservation. Furthermore, the students will also be involved in monitoring project implementation and its impact on water use in the school.
The schools will be further supported by HSBC-Malta to undertake community outreach activities and present the results of their projects to parents, close relatives and the school neighbouring community.
Minister for Energy and Water Management Joe Mizzi presented the project awards to the school representatives during an event held at GHAJN, the National Water Conservation Awareness Centre, in Rabat. He congratulated the schools and encouraged the students to “learn about the importance of good water management, and use these projects to make a difference in their schools and communities.” The Minister also thanked the teachers and administrators of the schools for facilitating the schools’ participation in this initiative and enabling the development of these project proposals with their students. “Your role in fostering the message of water conservation with our students is very important, more so when we consider that today’s students are tomorrow’s citizens – tomorrow’s leaders.”
