Assessing Deep Saline Aquifers: A New Step in Malta’s Water Management Strategy
10 Nov, 2025 | by RBMP Life |  A pilot initiative is currently underway in Malta to explore the potential of deep saline aquifers as an alternative water source. While this approach is new to the local context, it forms part of broader efforts to diversify and strengthen the country’s water management framework.
The project is being carried out under Action C11 – Exploitation of Deep Saline Aquifers, as part of the RBMP LIFE Malta project. It is coordinated through The Energy and Water Agency (EWA), with implementation led by the Water Services Corporation (WSC).
Drilling operations have commenced, targeting aquifers located approximately 140 meters below sea level. These formations are being studied to evaluate their suitability for water abstraction and treatment. Once drilling is complete, abstraction tests will be conducted to assess how the aquifer responds to different extraction rates. This will help determine its capacity and long-term viability.
To support this assessment, a small reverse osmosis plant will be installed on site. This facility will allow for controlled monitoring of the aquifer’s behavior, providing valuable data to inform future decisions on its potential integration into Malta’s water supply system.
This initiative reflects a proactive approach to addressing Malta’s water challenges through research, innovation, and collaboration.
