Action A.7: Development of a hydrographic model for Malta’s marine waters
Preparatory action

This preparatory action will explore the available hydrographical models which can be applied to Malta’s marine waters with a view to determine baseline hydrographical conditions for Maltese waters, whilst enabling compatibility with regional models.

  • The baseline hydrographical conditions of Malta’s marine waters are poorly understood and this action will seek the determination and characterisation of the hydrographical regime for Malta’s marine environment. This action, together with the complimentary concrete Action C.16, will be addressing this deficiency in hydrographic data and will not only enable assessment of changes to the hydrological regime, but will also enable characterisation of pressures resulting from the land-sea interface as well

  • as identification of pressures/impacts of transboundary origin. For this purpose, the action will involve networking with Mediterranean partners to work towards the selection of models that enable modelling of hydrographic characteristics at both national and regional scales. Key data requirements for the required modelling will be determined following discussions with Mediterranean partners and in consideration of the outcome of Malta’s monitoring programme which will be implemented in 2017-2018.

  • This action will result in the selection and acquisition of the most appropriate hydrographical model which can be run for Malta’s marine waters for the determination of baseline hydrographical conditions, the identification of data input needs and the setting up of the necessary

  • monitoring systems in Malta’s marine waters, including the procurement of the best available monitoring equipment (and their installation in the marine environment if deemed necessary) that would enable cost-effective data collection processes for this purpose.
