The Energy and Water Agency (EWA) recently completed its successful 2025 edition of the online sustainability course tailored for employees in Malta's corporate sector. This initiative, which has now become a cornerstone of Malta's corporate sustainability education, focused on energy, water, and sustainable solutions while demonstrating how the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can drive meaningful change toward sustainable development.

Course Structure and Content

The 2025 program ran from February to April, featuring weekly three-hour online sessions. The course was thoughtfully divided into two phases: Phase 1 delivered theoretical learning about sustainability concepts, while Phase 2 consisted of follow-up sessions applying Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) strategies to instill lasting behavioral change.

Participants engaged with key sustainability topics including:

  • Energy efficiency in the workplace
  • Sustainable water use strategies
  • Waste management solutions
  • Green infrastructure implementation
  • Retrofitting buildings for sustainability

The interactive format included group tasks, best practice discussions, and case studies led by industry experts, providing participants with practical knowledge they could immediately apply to their workplaces. Through these sessions, attendees developed actionable plans to reduce their organizations' environmental footprints.

Recognition and Networking

All participants who completed the course will receive certificates of attendance at the upcoming Sustainability Networking Conference scheduled for June 27, 2025. This conference will provide a valuable opportunity for collaboration among current and past participants, creating a community of sustainability advocates across Malta's business landscape.

A Legacy of Sustainability Education

The 2025 edition builds on EWA's long-standing commitment to sustainability education:

  • 2017-2018: The initiative began with 8 live sessions at ĠĦAJN, reaching 500 HSBC employees
  • 2020: Despite pandemic challenges, 2 out of 3 planned sessions were delivered to 35 participants
  • 2021: The program transitioned fully online with 3 virtual courses reaching 60 participants
  • 2022: 3 online courses engaged 40 participants in sustainable practices
  • 2023: 3 courses with 3-hour sessions educated 17 participants
  • 2024: 2 courses trained 31 participants
  • 2025: 2 courses reached 50 active participants, further strengthening Malta's sustainability movement

This initiative highlights EWA’s commitment to fostering a culture of sustainability across Malta’s corporate and government sectors. By equipping professionals with practical knowledge and tools, the Agency continues to support Malta's transition toward more sustainable business practices.

Participants from previous years have praised the course for its engaging format and practical approach, with representatives from organizations like the Institute of Cellular Pharmacology, Deloitte, HSBC, Malta Laboratories Network, APS, and Nestle highlighting the value of the collaborative learning environment and actionable insights gained.
